The National Turkey Federation (NTF) and United Egg Producers (UEP) released a statement today on the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) announced plan to use Farm Bill funding to support animal disease prevention and management:

“Prevention is the first step in keeping our flocks safe from disease. We applaud APHIS for moving forward with implementation of this important plan that will focus essential resources on animal disease prevention and management. The 2018 Farm Bill made an unprecedented investment in animal health, and the creation of the National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program (NADPRP) was a top priority for our members. We look forward to working with APHIS to ensure poultry producers have access to enhanced tools and resources needed to effectively prevent, identify and respond to disease threats and continue supplying consumers with safe, nutritious poultry products.”

Background
Section 12101 of the 2018 Farm Bill established a three-part program to help APHIS support animal disease prevention and management. The bill included funding to create two new programs: the National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasures Bank and the National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program (Preparedness and Response Program). It also expands funding opportunities for the existing National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN).
