California Activist on Trial for Alleged Poultry Farm Trespass and Theft

A California jury is hearing the case of Zoe Rosenberg, an animal rights activist accused of taking four chickens from a poultry processing facility owned by Perdue.

Rosenberg, a member of the Berkeley-based organization Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), is charged with repeatedly entering Petaluma Poultry property in 2023. Prosecutors allege she planted GPS trackers on company delivery trucks and removed birds from the site without permission. If found guilty, she could face a prison sentence of nearly five years.

Earlier this year, a Sonoma County judge ruled that Rosenberg could not present a defense claiming her actions were necessary to prevent harm, citing concerns about the deliberate nature of the incidents and potential risks to the plant’s operations. Her arrest in November 2023 came several months after DxE co-founder Wayne Hsiung received a sentence in a related case.
