Egg Prices Projected to Surge Over 40% in 2025 Amid Avian Flu Crisis

Retail egg prices in the United States are forecasted to rise by approximately 41.1% in 2025, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (ERS). This significant increase is primarily attributed to the ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which has severely impacted egg-laying hen populations and disrupted supply chains.

In January 2025 alone, egg prices experienced a 13.8% increase, following an 8.4% rise in December 2024. These consecutive monthly hikes have contributed to a 53% year-over-year increase in egg prices as of January. The national average price for a dozen eggs reached $4.95 in January, reflecting the strain on supply due to the culling of millions of birds affected by HPAI.The Washington Post+2ABC7 Chicago+2Good Morning America+2

The USDA has implemented a comprehensive $1 billion plan to address the crisis, allocating funds towards enhanced biosecurity measures, relief for affected farmers, vaccine development, and regulatory adjustments. Despite these efforts, the agency anticipates that significant short-term relief for consumers is unlikely, and egg prices may remain elevated throughout the year. The Washington Post

Consumers are advised to prepare for continued volatility in egg prices and potential shortages in the coming months. The USDA continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as new data becomes available.
