Feed the Need in Durham is welcoming an influx of protein from a group representing poultry farmers across Ontario.

The Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) are donating 700 kilograms of chicken.

Officials gathered Thursday at the Oshawa warehouse to celebrate the donation.

“One of our focuses here at Feed the Need is really on fresh, healthy foods,” said Ariela Kong, community development and program manager. “I think it’s great that we’re able to get such a large donation of chicken. As you know, the need is on the rise, and our families really need this food.”

The chicken will be given out to the food bank network, as well as Feed the Need’s grocery-style food banks in Oshawa and Whitby.

Organizers say the 700 kilograms should translate to around 6,300 meals.

“It will go far, for sure,” said Kong.

The donation is part of an ongoing partnership between the CFO and Feed Ontario.

“These events are designed to bring that awareness,” said Tim Klompmaker, board director for CFO’s District 9. “Maybe others within our community will have the ability to help out the food banks in whatever way that they possibly can.”

According to Klompmaker, the CFO helps distribute around one-million meals per year across the province.
