On September 18, 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced its backing for a new framework aimed at accelerating rail exports of American meat and poultry products destined for Mexico. This commitment is part of a broader effort to streamline trade, improve customs transitions at the border, and enhance regulatory harmonization between the two nations.
Under this arrangement, FSIS will collaborate with Canadian and Mexican authorities, trade stakeholders, and transportation agencies to reduce delays and expand export capacity. Officials believe that by modernizing cross-border protocols and sharing inspection data more effectively, U.S. producers will gain greater access to Mexican markets, and the flow of products will be more efficient and cost-effective. Alongside the export initiative, FSIS disclosed updates to its import data systems to better support verification and risk assessments. The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with stakeholders across industry, state governments, and academia, soliciting input and feedback as these cross-border systems evolve.
While the export measures are a focal point, FSIS continues to align its efforts with evolving food safety and public health priorities. By enhancing the regulatory infrastructure surrounding trade, FSIS aims to support U.S. producers and safeguard consumer confidence in meat and poultry products.
