A food-service recall has been issued across several provinces after potential contamination was discovered in certain Readyfoods brand lean ground turkey products. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed that some batches, produced by Exceldor Cooperative, may contain small fragments of plastic, prompting the removal of the items from distribution.
The affected turkey was supplied to hotels, restaurants, and institutional kitchens rather than individual retail shoppers. Shipments went out to Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Each recalled unit consists of two 2.5-kilogram packages and can be identified by the UPC code 10065822414821. The CFIA advises any food-service operators who received the product to stop using it immediately and to check inventory for the matching UPC.
Although no injuries or incidents have been reported, the agency states that plastic contamination poses potential safety risks, including choking hazards or damage to teeth, and therefore warrants removal from the market as a precaution.
This recall comes at a time of transition for the manufacturer. Earlier this year, in May, it was announced that Sofina Foods had begun the process of acquiring Exceldor Cooperative. The recall does not relate to the acquisition, but it places additional attention on the company as it prepares for the next phase of its operations within the Canadian poultry sector.
