Hygiena introduces 14 new BAX® System real-time PCR protocols for quantification of Salmonella and Campylobacter

True quantitative methods developed by Hygiena™ provide users with an easy-to-use sample prep with wide enumerable ranges for all difficult matrix types from farm to final product in the poultry industry.

Hygiena™, a leader in food safety testing, announces over 14 protocols for quantification applications (SalQuant™ and CampyQuant™) using the BAX® System Real-Time (RT) PCR Assays for Salmonella and Campylobacter. In addition to knowing if the pathogen is present, these methods accurately quantify Salmonella or Campylobacter levels when used with the BAX® System Q7 and shortened enrichment. No additional kits or components are required, only the BAX® System RT PCR Assay for Salmonella (KIT2006) or the BAX® System RT PCR Assay for Campylobacter jejuni/coli/lari (KIT2018). As a result, this revolutionary change in determining pathogen levels (rather than presence/absence) earned Hygiena™ the 2021 IAFP Food Safety Innovation Award.

As the leading pioneer for RT-PCR quantification, ease of use for our customers continues to be front of mind; therefore, easily accessible and detailed protocols paired with calculators are now provided for all customers via our website. In the case of Salmonella, over 14 different matrix protocols can be analyzed after shortened enrichment using the BAX® System RT PCR Assay for Salmonella on the BAX® System Q7 instrument. For Campylobacter, the shortest method previously available was an MPN-based method requiring long labor hours and many steps during sample prep. Now with the easy-to-use Hygiena™ CampyQuant™ for poultry rinsates, samples only need to be enriched for 20 hours before analyzing with the BAX® System RT PCR Assay for Campylobacter. Additionally, each serotype can be individually quantified for additional detail for poultry processors.

“We are so excited to offer a truly quantitative application for poultry testing that does not increase sample or lysis preparation steps. These applications of our RT PCR assays will dramatically improve the understanding of bacterial loads throughout the poultry production chain; processors can now quantify Salmonella or Campylobacter from the farm to final product to improve animal health, farm hygiene, verify sanitation and antimicrobial intervention processes in facilities, meet more stringent regulatory and quality standards, and protect consumers by knowing the risk a positive sample could pose,” said April Englishbey, PhD., product manager at Hygiena™. “We look forward to sharing our protocols, calculators, and the wealth of data we have produced internally and externally to support our ease-of-use and enumerable ranges to find the right fit for every industry need!”
