Darling Ingredients Inc. signed a letter of intent with Butterball, LLC to explore the construction of a new poultry rendering plant in North Carolina, according to a news release.

The facility, adjacent to Butterball’s Mt. Olive facility, is expected to process 18 million pounds of material per week through three lines.

Pending permits and final agreements, construction should begin in early 2024 and conclude in 2025.

The rendering plant will enhance reliability, increase capacity, and provide valuable ingredients for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel.

The project has garnered support from local leaders and agriculture officials, who believe it will have a positive impact on the state’s agricultural industry and economic growth.

Darling Ingredients operates more than 260 facilities in over 15 countries and repurposes about 15% of the world’s meat industry waste streams into green energy, renewable diesel, collagen, fertilizer, animal proteins and meals and pet food ingredients.
