AM Wholesale Meats Ltd., a poultry processing and distribution facility located at 2450 Anson Drive in Mississauga, has been fined $50,000 following a workplace incident that left a worker injured.

The conviction, handed down on October 27, 2025, followed a guilty plea in the Provincial Offences Court in Mississauga. The fine was imposed by Justice of the Peace Leslie Calhoun, with Crown Counsel Alicia Gordon-Fagan and Student-at-Law Nadine Nossibeh representing the prosecution. In addition to the fine, the court levied a 25 per cent victim fine surcharge, as required by the Provincial Offences Act. Funds from the surcharge support victims of crime through a special provincial program.

The offence occurred on March 7, 2024, when a worker operating a pallet truck in the shipping and receiving area struck a rack’s cross beam. The beam, which lacked locking pins, gave way, causing a pallet to fall and injure the worker.

An investigation by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development determined that the racking system at the facility had damaged diagonal cross braces and missing locking pins, creating unsafe storage conditions. The Ministry concluded that AM Wholesale Meats Ltd. failed to ensure that materials were stored in a manner that would not endanger workers, contrary to section 45(b)(ii) of Ontario Regulation 851 and sections 25(1)(c) and 66(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Following the incident, the company took corrective measures, including re-certifying its racking systems, implementing daily equipment inspections, conducting additional health and safety training, and hiring a dedicated health and safety and quality assurance employee.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining safe storage systems and proper inspection protocols in warehouse and industrial workplaces.
