JBS USA has teamed up with GreenGasUSA to produce renewable natural gas (RNG) at several of its beef and poultry production sites across the United States. This collaboration aligns with JBS’s broader goal of promoting sustainability by addressing greenhouse gas emissions through innovative methods.
JBS is focused on reducing its environmental impact by adopting circular economy strategies. The company’s approach involves converting waste generated during food production into renewable energy, helping to offset reliance on fossil fuels.
As part of the partnership, JBS will install GreenGasUSA’s systems to purify biogas from wastewater streams into pipeline-quality RNG. This renewable energy will significantly reduce fossil fuel use, with environmental benefits equivalent to preventing the emissions produced by 60 million miles driven by a car or the burning of 26 million pounds of coal annually.
The initial installations will occur at JBS’s facilities in Grand Island, Nebraska, Hyrum, Utah, and at Pilgrim’s facility in Sumter, South Carolina. The South Carolina project is expected to be operational in early 2025, with the other two facilities following by the end of that year.
Beyond reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this partnership will also enhance wastewater management and improve air and water quality at the production sites. Since 2019, JBS has implemented over 25 projects to capture or eliminate methane emissions from waste lagoons, resulting in a global reduction of over 600,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases annually.
