China has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Chinese Ministry of Agriculture officials say H5N1 was found on a poultry farm in the southern province of Hunan, where authorities culled nearly 18,000 chickens.

The Center for Disease Control says the Asian H5N1 strain is especially deadly for poultry.

A similar virus, H5N2, resulted in the loss of millions of chickens and turkeys in the U.S. five years ago.

And while the risk from H5N1 is low to most people, the CDC says human infections have occurred.
