The August Egg Company, based in Hilmar, California, has issued a recall for 1.7 million dozen brown cage-free and certified organic eggs over concerns they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The potentially affected eggs were distributed between February 3 and May 15, 2025, across California and Nevada, with sell-by dates ranging from March 4 to June 4, 2025. Retailers that carried the products include Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less, and Ralphs. Additionally, Walmart locations in nine states — California, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, New Mexico, Nebraska, Indiana, and Illinois — received shipments through May 6, 2025, with sell-by dates up to June 19, 2025.
The recall is linked to an ongoing Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak investigation. Salmonella can cause serious illness, especially in children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and cause more severe complications.
Consumers are advised to check their egg cartons for the plant codes P-6562 or CA5330 and Julian dates between 032 and 126. These identifiers can be found printed on one side of the carton, which may be either fiber or plastic.
As a precaution, August Egg Company has suspended sales of fresh shell eggs and has been sending its eggs to a processing facility where they are pasteurized to eliminate any pathogens.
Customers who purchased the affected eggs are encouraged to return them to the store where they were bought for a full refund. For more information, the company can be reached at 1-800-710-2554 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
